Getting the You are Not Authorised Error Message? Here’s How to Troubleshoot

The “you are not authorised” error message appears when you open a browser from a different PC. Don’t open the same account from multiple devices. This could cause security issues and will prevent you from using the browser. 

Usually, this error occurs when the browser fails to complete the client request. Users need to provide valid authentication credentials to resolve the issue. 

Did you change the wireless router’s security settings? It could generate this authentication issue when browsing the internet.

Disable the home router’s SPI Firewall and use the browser without hassle. Sometimes you might experience this problem after updating the web browsers. Downgrade to an older web browser version to stop getting this error message.

What causes the You are not Authorised Error on the Wireless Devices?

Several reasons could trigger this problem in web browsers. Did you receive this message when attempting to access a specific page from your account? Then, you are likely a “Restricted” user or don’t have permission to open the site. 

This indicates the administrator made restrictions on who can access the page. If this is the case, contact the account administrator to request access to the page. Additionally, you should check whether you have added the PC’s MAC address in the router’s web GUI.

Open the router’s web interface and disable the MAC filtering option. Remove the PC’s MAC address from the blocked or restricted device list. Click “Apply”, open the browser and look for the website that you want to open. If the error persists, something is wrong with the PC account settings.

There are many ways to fix this authentication error from Windows or Mac devices. Sometimes, an outdated web browser could cause this problem. If you are using a Windows PC or laptop, open Chrome or Internet Explorer. 

Tap on “Settings” to install the latest web browser versions. Are you receiving the “you are not authorised” message on Safari? Access the Apple menu, tap on “App Store”, and head towards “Updates”. 

Search for “Safari” from the macOS app list and click “Update”. Restart the Mac device, try to open Safari and check if it is displaying the authentication error. If the error persists, follow these solutions to eliminate this complicated problem:

1. Update the User Settings 

Did you change the Microsoft account settings? There is a high chance that you have removed your account name from the owner’s list. Reconfigure the Microsoft account details to resolve the authentication issue. Restart the Windows device, and hold the Windows and R keys together afterwards.

Write “control” when the Run box paper and hit the Enter button. Wait until the Control Panel page opens and double-tap on “User Account”. Head towards “Users”, opt for “Settings”, and check the user’s name. Add your account name there and set its status as “Account Owner”

2. Log out and Log in to the Browser

If you have synced the same browser account on the different devices, sign out from them. And, never use the same email address to open browsers from different accounts. It might cause authentication issues and restrict you from using the internet. 

Are you trying to open Chrome from a PC or Android phone? Open the browser, double-tap on the account name and select “Sign out of all accounts”. Close the web browser, enter the correct login credentials and click “Sign In”.

How to Sign Out from Safari from a Mac Device?

It’s pretty easy to log out from the Safari browser. Open the Mac device, go to the Finder app and tap on “Safari”. Now, hold the Command, Option and Alt keys together to sign out from the browser. Alternatively, you can press the Escape key to force quit Safari.

If you use Safari from an iPhone, open the browser’s settings menu. Enter the Apple ID and choose “Sign Out” when the pop-up menu appears. Restart iPhone, double-tap on the Safari icon and enter the login information. After signing in, you can use the browser without further interruption.

3. Clear the Default Browser Cache

Browsers store the data of the websites you have accessed. If you open a malicious site, the device will block you from using the browser to secure the data. Clear the browser cache to recess the web browsers from the PC or smartphone. 

Don’t know how to remove the browsing history? This might vary depending on the web browser you use. If you use Chrome, tap on “More” and go for “More Tools” to clear all the browsing data. Or, you can choose a time range and select which data you want to delete. 

Moreover, iOS or macOS users need to access the Safari settings. Choose “Clear history and website data” and click “Ok” when the confirmation message pops up. Close the Safari window and open it after a few minutes. Try to open the site where you were getting an authentication error and check if the error persists. 

Alternative Fixes for You are not Authorised Error

Sometimes, the Windows Defender Firewall could prevent you from using the browser. Open the Control Panel program and disable this security feature. 

Do you use a VPN service? It might cause authentication problems when opening a secured site.

Open the Settings app by pressing the Windows and I keys together and disable VPN. An incorrect IAG configuration could cause this authentication error. Open the device settings, head to “Web Servers”, and check the user permissions. 

Verify that the policy selected allows the intended clients to access the portal. Try to open a web browser and check if it is showing the “you are not authorised” error. If the error persists, uninstall and reinstall the web browser to resolve the issue.
